An unnamed OpenAI model allegedly ‘broke out’ and ’escaped into the wild’ from its ‘highly isolated sandbox’ and then hacked Hugging Face. The story is all over the internet warning about the power of current day LLMs. But that is not what happened.

Don’t let popular trade press stories confuse you. They can be nice cyberpunk narratives, they may be interesting PR, but they do little to give you actionable advice.

What happened is that the model told its harness how to use tools to gain access beyond a sandbox within which it was supposed to be confined.

That sandbox’s isolation failed.

What did not happen was that the model took on a life of its own.

What did not happen was that the model started to live somewhere else, like a virus breaking out of a lab would.

What did not happen was that the model consciously decided to ignore moral and ethical values.

Network and other security protections failed at OpenAI and Hugging Face. The harness was network restricted, but the model found a way to access another system that did have internet access, and used that as a jump host.

It is more realistic to compare this to a mobster boss in prison using a smuggled cellphone to continue doing his business. Bad enough, but the boss stays in prison, he did not suddenly get out of it. The real problem is that the prison security did not succeed in restricting this access.

Similarly, the real problem at OpenAI was not the amount of resources spent on a ‘highly isolated sandbox’, the real problem was the ineffectiveness of the sandbox.

We should not confuse effort with outcome. Did they spend a lot of effort on the sandbox isolation? Probably. Was it effective? Apparently not.

So what does this mean for the average company? Two things.

One. Expect more automated attacks. OpenAI has models that can do this to you. They are not the only one building models with this capability, and the others may not be so public about it.

Two: the other direction. The agents inside your organizations can be misled to exfiltrate data or attack other systems. Every agent needs privilege reduction and egress controls — the same controls that would have stopped the jump-host trick. Even if not 100% effective, they are still part of your defense-in-depth.
